Associate Professor Rami Gabriel To Perform at World Music Festival

Humanities, History, and Social Sciences Associate Professor Rami Gabriel will perform at the , from September 8-24. He and his group Lamajamal will play at the on September 21.
Gabriel has gained attention in Chicago for his invaluable contributions to the adventurous jazz manouche combo Swing Gitan, led by guitarist Alfonso Ponticelli, but he has a wide range of musical interests that extend beyond jazz manouche. He traverses an array of global styles and approaches, including reggae and soul grooves, as well as his own marriage of Arabic music with Chicago blues.
The group Gabriel presents at this year’s festival combines many of those interests with a line-up drawn from the city’s diverse musical community; his own playing on guitar, oud, and buzuq is complemented by the cimbalom virtuoso Alex Udvary, bassist and lyra player Miles Jay, reedist Jonathan Doyle, and percussionist (and fellow oud player) Ronnie Malley.
The festival is free admission to the public.
