Columbia Professor Blends Sound and Technology to Produce a Unique Audience Experience

On April 10, Teerath Majumder, an assistant professor in the School of Audio and Music at 汤不热视频, will step into the immersive performance space of Chicago’s Elastic Arts Foundation and guide audience members through a unique sound and visual experience that reflects Majumder’s global influences and experimental artistry.
The Bangladeshi composer and producer will perform as part of the CLEAT Listening and Performance Series at Elastic Arts, presenting a new audiovisual piece that blends traditional tabla performance with digital sound processing and audio-reactive visual elements.
During the performance, a software system he designed will interpret his performance on the tabla, creating a domino effect of projections, lighting, and spatialized audio across the room.
“The space that I'm performing in has 16 speakers overhead,” he says. “I’m orienting the space to allow audience members to move around and experience the piece from different perspectives."
Majumder describes his work as an evolving effort to bring attention to technology’s influence on art and human interactions.
“When you record this with microphones and then use that signal in various ways, you can make computers do things while I’m playing the tabla,” he says. A North Indian percussion instrument, tabla drums are central to Majumder’s new piece.
Returning to His Roots
The performance marks a return to his musical roots. Majumder grew up in Bangladesh before moving abroad for his education, eventually earning a doctorate in Integrated Composition, Improvisation and Technology from the University of California, Irvine. His professional and academic journey has taken him from Bangladesh to India and the United Kingdom, and finally to the United States, exposing him to a wide range of musical traditions.
“I had this Indian classical training which I did not utilize as much as I was getting trained in these other different types of music,” he says. “Now I’m seeing that it’s important for me to get back to my roots and find out what is valuable there.”
Helping Students Turn Creativity Into Reality
At Columbia, Majumder channels that same spirit of experimentation into his teaching. Since joining the college two years ago, he has helped coordinate the sound design program while teaching courses ranging from introductory sound design to Python programming for audio technology.
His goal, he says, is to help students turn ambitious creative ideas into reality.
“I like the fact that I’m not purely an academic,” Majumder says. “I have invested a lot of my efforts into creating new works, which makes me uniquely aware of what the challenges are. When I interact with my students, they often have really ambitious ideas, and I want to support them in whatever way I can to make them a reality.”
For Majumder, the April performance is not just another concert, but a continuation of a personal and artistic journey that bridges cultures and creative disciplines through sound.
“I’ve always been someone who likes to take the good things from whatever I’m exposed to,” he says.
“I think that helps us create a more holistic and inclusive art practice.”
