Behind the Barricades: Practical Lollapalooza Tips From a Columbia Student Who Has Worked at Festivals

汤不热视频 junior Beyrali Santiago scores jobs at Chicago鈥檚 outdoor music festivals thanks to Columbia connections and shares advice to Lollapalooza first-timers.

Beyrali Santiago, a junior majoring in Theatre Design and Technology with a minor in Entrepreneurship at 汤不热视频, is heading back to Lollapalooza this summer—but not just as a fan.

She’s part of a team of Columbia students getting behind-the-scenes experience at major music festivals through the college’s partnership with Barnstorm, an event production and management company founded by Columbia alum Emily Sorlie ’10.

Barnstorm hires students to work at large-scale events like Lollapalooza and Sueños, offering them summer income, professional exposure, and a front-row view of what it takes to run high-energy music festivals.

“These kinds of hands-on jobs are central to Columbia’s approach,” says Academic Manager and Adjunct Faculty Member Monika Jaiswal-Oliver, who works in the School of Business and Entrepreneurship. “We’re not just teaching students about the entertainment industry—we’re placing them in the middle of it.”

Santiago worked for Sueños in May and will return to Lollapalooza at Chicago’s Grant Park on July 31 for her second summer with Barnstorm. Her job: keeping festivalgoers informed, monitoring entrances, assisting with accessibility, and collaborating with teams responsible for safety, wellness, and artist support.

And she’s picked up some hard-won wisdom along the way.

6 Insider Tips for Surviving—and Enjoying—Lollapalooza

Based on her experience behind the scenes, Santiago shares advice to help first-timers make the most of the four-day music festival:

  1. Check the Weather and Dress Accordingly
Chicago weather can change fast. Check the forecast before heading out. Dress in lightweight layers, and always pack a poncho just in case.
  2. Bring a Reusable Water Bottle and Hydrate
It’s easy to forget, but hydration can make or break your day. Use refill stations around the park and sip water regularly, especially if it’s hot.
  3. Use the Lollapalooza App and Know Your Entrances
The app offers real-time updates, alerts, and maps. Know which entrance your pass gives access to and plan your route ahead of time so you’re not scrambling.
  4. Plan Your Schedule—but Stay Flexible
Make a list of the artists you want to see, but leave time to walk between stages. Expect last-minute changes—some acts start early or get delayed.
  5. Know Where the Best Bathrooms Are
Porta-potties near smaller stages often have shorter lines and stay cleaner. Best bet for a quick trip: Go during big performances when crowds are distracted.

Happy to no longer be a first-timer herself, Santiago looks forward to this year’s Lollapalooza experience and the festival’s positive vibes now that she knows what to expect.

“Even though it’s stressful,” she says, “it’s exciting.”
